Ketamine is an extremely safe medication when administered in a controlled setting and in low doses by a licensed provider. However, there are a few medical conditions that might prohibit you from receiving ketamine treatments and include the following: uncontrolled high blood pressure, unstable heart disease, untreated hyperthyroid disease, renal insufficiency, liver impairment, current manic episode, or active psychotic (hallucinations or delusions) symptoms associated with schizophrenia, history of ketamine dependence and current pregnancy.
If you are suffering from acute suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. We will help you get in touch with your local crisis center or mental health provider. However, our clinic does not currently treat patients with acute suicidal ideations.
It is recommended that you continue to take all your medications as scheduled. As you progress with your ketamine treatment plan, you may find a decreased need for your medications or antidepressants. It is highly recommended that you continue to work with your primary care provider or mental health provider to wean off these medications rather than stopping abruptly to prevent potential rebound effects.
We also recommend that you not take benzodiazepines (i.e. Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, Valium) the day of your treatment. You may obtain better results if you are weaned off of your benzodiazepines prior to ketamine treatment. Opioid pain medications (i.e. Oxycontin, Vicodin, Norco, Percocet, MS-Contin) and muscles relaxers should not be taken 6 hours prior to your infusion or within 4 hours after your infusion. If you have a prescription to medical cannabis, we also recommend you avoid the use 3 days prior to your treatment.
At a certified SPRAVATO® treatment center, you will administer the nasal spray yourself. SPRAVATO® can not be bought in pharmacies and is only available to those within the SPRAVATO® Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) Program.
Patients can expect to feel a calm, relaxing sensation during the treatment. Some may experience a “light, floaty” feeling or see patterns or visual changes. After using the SPRAVATO® nasal spray, there is an observation period of at least two hours. Our staff will monitor you as you rest and you will not drive or operate heavy machinery until the next day, so you should plan for a ride on treatment days.
Improvement of depression symptoms was found after four weeks of SPRAVATO® (in addition to daily oral antidepressants) during clinical studies. However, after just one treatment, many patients experience immediate relief from depression and suicidal ideation.
Yes, SPRAVATO® is covered by insurance.
Our services are generally not covered by Medicare. However, Medicare-eligible patients can receive the benefit of SPRAVATO® treatment at Revitalizing Therapies if the patient voluntarily agrees to a private pay contract. This contract states that the patient will not submit medical charges to Medicare for reimbursement. The patient must review and sign the contract prior to scheduling the initial treatment.
